Mabel Astarloa-Haley was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she pursued her studies achieving a Degree in Fine Arts and a Master’s Degree in painting. She furthered her educational background in the study of costume and set design in Buenos Aires, at the School of Arts Decoratifs in Paris, France, and at the Slade School in London, England. She worked with choreographers as well as directors in the major theatres of Buenos Aires.
In 1968, Mabel moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she continued developing her reputation as a costume and set designer. Her numerous credits include works at such Institutions as Harvard University, the Boston Ballet, the Boston Conservatory of Music, the Opera Company of Boston, the Joffrey Ballet, the Hartford Ballet, the Louisville Ballet, as well as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in Canada and the Grand Theatre du Geneve in Switzerland. During this period, she was also lecturing in the Theater Arts Department at Brandeis University.
In the mid 80s, she and her family moved to London, England, for nine years. Presently Mabel resides in Portland, Oregon where she has guest lectured at Portland State University.
She has also designed sets and costumes for 10 original productions by Ron Cunningham with the Sacramento Ballet Company, California.
Presently she is devoting her energies solely to painting, having exhibited consistently across the area.
“One of the things that interest me about the rodeo is its similarity to a theatre production. The rodeo arena is the 'stage' where men and beasts are the 'protagonists' of an unscripted story. Part dialog, part of the wills, both sides create a dramatic tension of their own under the 'lights' of the summer sun.”
